In Memory of Dave Benua

We received word last night that our newest Cyclopath, Dave Benua, passed away Sunday after a sudden heart attack. Dave rode to Gloucester on Saturday with the group and seemed fine. (Will even took his photo -above right- as he rode into Manchester.) I know this comes as shocking news to all who rode with him these last few months. We send our condolences to his family.

We all enjoyed riding with Dave. He was generally among the first to show up for a Saturday ride, and he eagerly led us on our trail to breakfast. Dave was a conversationalist about biking and his dear family. He was proud of his son who attended the Commonwealth High School in Boston and about to graduate and was accepted at Carnegie-Mellon, Pittsburgh for the fall. Dave mentioned that his son had 2 summer jobs for spending money at college. Indeed Dave was a gentleman and wasa genuinely concerned about the welfare of the Cyclopaths. He wore our "greeny" with pride every chance he could get. Personally I liked Dave and looked forward to our rides. I can still see him at 6am flying across the Causeway of Marblehead Neck speedily on his way to work in Woburn. Being helpful was Dave's middle name for I remember his fixing of my recent flat in Beverly with aplomb and expertise.

Wow. I can't believe it. I agree with everything Sheldon said about Dave. When I rode with him a couple weeks ago and we got split up from Margie, Kathy & Carl he rode back to make sure nobody was hurt or lost. A really nice, caring guy,fun to ride with. I'm really going to miss him.

Dave was a real, genuinely sweet guy. The time that I've spent cycling with him is time that I will cherish forever. He loved cycling with us, and I enjoyed talking commute stuff with him.

The last conversation that I had with him was regarding his son's up-coming attendance at Carnegie-Mellon; he was such the proud Papa.

I still can't believe that he's gone. I'm sad and miss him. I'm angry that his life was cut short. But I will always be happy thinking about the good times that we had.

I know that he knows how much we enjoyed his company, and every time that we hit the roads on Saturday, you can be sure that he'll be right there with us.

Rest in peace, Dave. You are in our hearts always.

- Lynda

Rest in Peace Dave. It is amazing that someone you ride with to Gloucester and share breakfast with one day is gone the next. A reminder to Carpe Diem and spend time with the ones you love.
Condolensces to his family.

I just sent this note to Commonwealth School, where I graduated in 1984. I cannot believe this. My heart goes out to Dave's family and those at Commonwealth who knew him.

To Commonwealth:

I know it's a strange coincidence, but I was out riding with Dave Benua on Saturday to Gloucester, as he was also part of a North Shore Cyclopaths cycling group. I was reading the comments on the group's page and saw that his son attends Commonwealth. Needless to say, I cannot believe this horrible and strange coincidence. My thoughts are with the Benua family and to people at the school who know his son, whom I have never met. Dave was a great guy to ride with and he was always talking about the next project he wanted to do on his bike. He was commuting to work everyday and said we was logging 200 miles a week. That's something. He will me missed within our group and I'm sure at school.

So sad... We had a really nice ride (and breakfast) with Dave on Saturday. He was kind enough to fix my cleat for me when he noticed my heel was misaligned (I, of course, didn't notice). He will be missed.

oh no... I really liked Dave. he drove me home several times after the Saturday rides, showed me how to use the bike pump, and was always an interesting person to chat with. I'll miss him.

I worked with Dave on and off for over 6 years and over the past couple of years loved to hear that he was getting more and more involved with his cycling. I love that he was involved with what seems like a great cycling community and made many friends in his short time in the group. He was an amazing man to work with, and it is great to see so many similar comments from the social side of his life.

Thanks for posting the photos - for those of us overseas (in the UK) they really mean a lot.
