Indoor Cycling

Since most of you reading this blog are on "road hiatus", I thought I'd delve into a few different topics of discussion this week. Who is taking a break and who is training indoors this winter, (in addition to compulsive riders Lynda and Bruce)? Are you working out at home with a trainer, or are you heading out to spin classes? What keeps you motivated?

Registration for PMC Heavy Hitters opens today.

For those considering the PMC Sunday ride (Wellesley RT) -- The registration fee for the Wellesley Sunday 1-day ride is now $125. (Not $170).

Well, I don't own a trainer, but I do have a pair of studded snow tires. The weather has finally cooperated over the last couple of days, although it's still on the cold side: it was 28 degrees at 6:38 AM according to the bank in the Saugus town square this morning.

I've been cross training with the stair climber, lifting weights and doing spinning classes for much of the last couple of weeks. There's no substitute for riding, of course.

Dave, Are you riding the same bike you ride in the summer (with the studded tires added) or do you have a bike specifically for winter riding? (I'm wondering about the sand and salt and road crap, etc... You must have to clean it a lot.)

The winter program looks like this:

Saturday, Sunday, and Monday spin classes with add-ons (time and drills).

Tuesday - RTA (Weight training)

Thursday - coached trainer sessions with Janda Ricci-Munn to try and add 10% to my VO2Max / Sustained Power Output numbers.

I am off the road until the first good rain storm and temps get close to 40.

There is a possibility of 1 or 2 training trips down to VA or NC for long weekends.

In the gym 3-4 days per week for 12 weeks, on the bike 3-5 sessions per week for the same duration (indoor or outdoor). Mid-April is the start of Brevet season, starting with a 107k mid-month and 200k end of month.

I'm hoping that we'll have an early start to the Cyclopath season!
